HAWAIIAN STYLE
The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands in the central Pacific Ocean, southwest of the continental United States, southeast of Japan, and northeast of Australia. With a total land area of 6,425 square miles (16,640 km2), they are the most isolated grouping of islands on earth sitting 1,860 miles (3,000 km) from the nearest continent. Once known as the "Sandwich Islands", the archipelago now takes its name from the largest island in the cluster.
The eight islands are named Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui and Hawaii. The Hawaiian islands are commonly referred to as the Aloha State.
The archipelago is physiographically and ethnologically part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania. The Kingdom of Hawaii was sovereign from 1810 until 1893 when the monarchy was overthrown by resident American (and some European) businessmen. It was an independent republic from 1894 until 1898, when it was annexed by the United States as a territory, becoming a state in 1959.
Hawaii’s natural beauty, warm tropical climate, inviting waters and waves, and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for tourists, surfers, biologists, and BJJ crazies alike. Due to its mid-Pacific location, Hawaii has many North American and Asian influences along with its own vibrant native culture. Hawaii has over a million permanent residents along with many visitors and U.S. military personnel.
KAUAI - THE GARDEN ISLAND
